'TS16'

Yarns at the galley table

(1).. I enjoyed your Hartley TS16 website. Finally the "grand mother" of all trailer sailers has a website dedicated to it. I have a TS16 "Just Fun" that I've been restoring and sailing for the last 3 years. What fun and as an ex-South African I think the TS16 is one of NZ's best kept secrets of getting into boating and sailing the cheap way. My boat and the Mariner outboard I got with it must be at least 25 years old.

 Greetings Folks... a little yarn : )
I drew a rough....er very rough pencil sketch of a TS16 for my wife one day when we were discussing how much fun it would be to do some sailing. Following week I traveled to Brisbane from the Sunshine Coast to have a squiz at a Seagull outboard a bloke advertised ..... outboard was overpriced and definitely not the model described... But a sad looking little TS16 sitting under a tree covered in leaves. (this was the first time I heard the name Hartley, though I knew the design look) I asked a price, a bit of humming and harring later he says 23 hundred... it's got 7 sails ! so I got Narelle to come from feeding our daughter and have a look...Mentioning that he wanted 23 for it.. We had a look and she was very uninterested. I said I'd give him a call and we left. Coulda got I for 2 I said rather disappointedly... TWO THOUSAND? she inquired with totally renewed enthusiasm! I thought you meant 23 thousand !!! ( she's a Victorian). So she rang the next Monday and offered $1800 cash... We got a great deal a near new trailer (registered with new tyres) The major problem being covered up rot in both aft quarter decks and Coamings... fixed em up, another new experience The end result being I taught myself to sail in an afternoon in the Mooloola River... well at least we managed to tack up wind and miss all obstacles ... many expensive ones at that. We want a bigger Hartley now, because nothing could have been easier to sail. Thank you Mr. Hartley and crew! My drawing turned into a reality, and though many will say we should have taken lessons... I really doubt that there would have been an easier boat to show us the wonders of sailing.... We're hooked Attached is our "Tardus" and Narelle & Enya Cheers & Endorsements
